Late one night in Happy Valley, AZ, a longtime Cardsmiths collector opened a stack of Currency Series 4 packs purchased from their local GameStop—and pulled one of the most exciting cards in the hobby: a 1 Bitcoin Redemption.
For most collectors, that’s where the story would end. But for this fan, it was just the beginning. Months earlier, they had made a promise on Reddit: if they ever pulled a Bitcoin redemption, they would donate half of the after-tax value to charity.
“I’d been saving up boxes for a while,” the winner recalls. “It was late, I was sorting through everything, not expecting much. Then I saw the card. It still doesn’t feel quite real.”
At the time, they imagined the most they might pull was a 0.1 BTC card—enough to make the donation meaningful but manageable. “I didn’t think it was a serious possibility,” they said.
A Journey Through Cardsmiths History
This collector’s story with Cardsmiths began years earlier at GameStop, during the height of the “meme stock” craze. After seeing Currency Series 1 packs on the shelf, they bought a few—and were instantly hooked.
From there, they built full base sets, traded with other collectors, and pre-ordered each new release. “I’m not chasing redemptions for the gamble,” they explained. For this collector, it’s about the art, the humor, and the community. The redemption is just a bonus.
Keeping a Promise, Quietly
When the 1 BTC card arrived and the wallet was funded, the winner went to work planning their next steps:
